How can you reduce your hot water costs?

The right system, capacity, settings and energy source can make a meaningful difference to household energy use and future bills.

Choose a system suited to your household

The most efficient water heater is not necessarily the same for every home.

Hot water usage varies according to household size, shower habits, appliance use and the number of outlets operating at the same time.

An undersized system may run out of hot water, while an oversized storage system may waste energy heating water your household does not need.

We consider your household usage, existing energy supply, available installation space, rooftop solar and budget before recommending a system.

Switch to more efficient hot water

If your existing system is old, unreliable or expensive to operate, replacement may provide an opportunity to reduce future energy costs.

Depending on your property and household, suitable options may include:

  • An appropriately sized electric storage water heater
  • Electric hot water configured to use rooftop solar
  • An energy-efficient heat pump hot water system
  • Rooftop or split-system solar hot water
  • An efficient instantaneous gas water heater

If gas hot water is your last remaining gas appliance, switching to an all-electric system may also allow you to investigate disconnecting the gas supply and avoiding ongoing connection charges.

Ways to improve hot water efficiency

Small changes to your system, settings and usage can help reduce wasted energy.

Correct capacity

Choose a water heater that can meet your household’s needs without heating and storing more water than necessary.

Timers and tariffs

Suitable timers, operating schedules and electricity tariffs may reduce costs without affecting your hot water supply.

Rooftop solar

Use electricity generated during the day to heat and store water for use later in the evening or the following morning.

Regular servicing

Correct maintenance can identify faults, heat loss and worn components that may reduce system performance.

Energy-efficient hot water options

Compare available technologies before choosing your next water heater.

Electric hot water

An appropriately sized electric system can be scheduled to operate when rooftop solar is generating electricity.

heat pump prices

Heat pump hot water

Heat pumps transfer heat from the surrounding air into the water, using considerably less electricity than conventional electric storage systems.

Solar hot water

Roof-mounted collectors capture heat from the sun, reducing the electricity or gas required to provide household hot water.

Instantaneous gas

Instantaneous systems heat water on demand and avoid the energy used to keep a storage tank hot throughout the day.

Is your hot water system more than 10 years old?

An ageing water heater may consume more energy, become less reliable and require increasingly frequent repairs.

Signs your system may be losing efficiency

Older systems can sometimes be repaired, but replacement may offer better long-term value.

  • Water taking longer to heat
  • Hot water running out sooner
  • Fluctuating water temperature
  • Increasing gas or electricity usage
  • Unusual noises from the tank
  • Rust-coloured or discoloured water
  • Leaks or corrosion around the system
  • Recurring faults and repair bills

Planning ahead gives you time to compare suitable systems and make an informed decision before your existing water heater fails.

Upgrade while incentives are available

Government assistance can reduce the upfront cost.

Eligible NSW households and small businesses may receive an incentive when replacing an existing gas or electric water heater with an approved heat pump.

Eligible heat pump and solar hot water systems may also qualify for federal incentives through Small-scale Technology Certificates.

As Accredited Providers under the heat pump rebate program, we can check your eligibility, manage the paperwork and apply available savings upfront.

The enhanced NSW heat pump incentive is scheduled to end in June 2027 but may close earlier if its allocated funding is exhausted. Federal incentive values also reduce each year.

Is your water heater running efficiently?

Regular servicing can identify faults that increase energy use.

Leaks, sediment, worn valves, failing components and incorrect settings can affect your water heater’s performance and running costs.

Maintenance requirements vary between system types and manufacturers. A major service is commonly recommended approximately every five years, but you should follow the schedule specified for your particular system.

Servicing should be completed by appropriately licensed technicians. Correct maintenance can support safe operation, extend system life and help preserve the terms of the manufacturer’s warranty.
