How do heat pumps work?

hot do heat pumps workHeat pumps use technology to extract and intensify the warmth that is naturally in the air around us and then use that warmth to produce hot water.

Using a process similar to refrigerators, think of a heat pump like a fridge or air conditioner, but in reverse; instead of making everything inside cold, they make everything inside hot!

Powered by electricity, heat pumps take warmth from the air to heat the water (much like a reverse-cycle air conditioner in winter).  By extracting heat from the air outside, heat pumps use it to heat the water and store it in a tank.

Unlike solar hot water systems, they don’t use solar collectors mounted on the roof. Using smart technology to efficiently transfer thermal energy directly from the surrounding air into the water, means heat pumps don’t have to rely on direct sunlight or large amounts of fossil fuels to provide the energy source.

The step by step process of how heat pumps work.

1. The sun heats the air

This is where the solar energy is initially created, but the air doesn’t need to be warm for a heat pump to extract heat from it. In fact, heat pumps can extract enough heat from the air to produce hot water, even if the air temperature is -10°C.

2. Energised air is inducted into the heat pump

As the air drawn into the system, the heat pump utilise a refrigeration process to separate and extract the heat energy from the air.

3. Energy is transferred to heat cold water

This heat energy is then transferred to the water. This heats the entire water tank from the outside in, eliminating any potential for corrosion or cross-contamination.

The heat pump system onsists of an insulated storage tank and a heating module. The heating module must be installed outdoors, but there are options to install the storage tank either outdoors with the heating module, or indoors separated from the heating module by up to 4 metres.

4. Cold air is expelled

As the heat has been extracted from the air and transferred to the water; the remaining cold air is then discharged from the heat pump via a fan.

Are heat pumps cheap to run?

Heat pumps draw less electricity than a traditional electric storage water heater, and in doing so, are more energy efficient.

Heat pumps use approximately 60% less electricity than a conventional electric hot water system offering significant savings on your electricity bills. They create less CO2 emissions than a typical gas water heater thereby reducing your carbon footprint.

Heat pump water heaters can reduce the energy you use and greenhouse emissions by up to 65%* depending on where you live, according to Australian Government-approved modelling.

After installing a new heat pump hot water system, the impact on your electricity bill will depend on the tariffs you pay and the type of water heater being replaced. The majority of homeowners see the greatest savings on hot water bills when replacing an electric water heater on a continuous tariff.

Heat pump water heaters are recommended for connection to either 24-hour continuous tariff or extended off-peak, minimum of 16 hours per day.

The benefits of switching to heat pump hot water

  • Reduced energy bills.  Heat pumps consume about 1/3 the electricity of traditional electric water heaters.
  • An alterative to solar hot water. Heat pumps are an energy efficient alterative to solar hot water where shaded or limited roof space is a problem without enough room for roof mounted solar collectors.
  • Easy replacement. Heat pumps are an ideal replacement option for an electric water heater as they will often use existing plumbing
  • Government rebates may be available. Contact us to find out if you’re eligible.
  • Low maintenance. The heat pump requires minimal maintenance, reducing the hassle and cost of upkeep over the years. Additionally, new generation heat pump hot water systems made by reliable manufacturers come with a generous warranty.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing they’re making a positive impact on the environment whilst saving money in the process, provides great peace of mind for the homeowners. It’s a win for the customer and a win for the environment.

What’s the difference between heat pump hot water and solar?

Heat pumps use technology to extract and intensify the warmth that is naturally in the air around us then uses that warmth to produce hot water.

Heat pumps don’t use solar collectors mounted on the roof like solar systems. Solar water heaters work by absorbing energy from the sun’s rays in the roof mounted solar collectors and transferring this to heat water stored in the tank. Ground mounted direct systems rely on an inbuilt circulator to push the water through the system, whereas roof mounted systems rely on a natural ‘thermosiphon’ effect. Water passes through the solar collector where it is heated, then moves out of the collector and into the tank. The tank gradually gets hotter until the water reaches its maximum stored temperature. Indirect systems use a special heating fluid, rather than water to absorb heat from the collectors. The heat is transferred to the water in the tank via a heat exchanger.

Switching to heat pump hot water from gas or electric hot water.

Can a heat pump replace my current electric or gas hot water system?

We can quickly install a new heat pump to replace your old electric or gas hot water system.

Heat pumps are often a simple replacement from an electric water heater as they have similar storage tanks and use the same plumbing and electric connections.

By switching from gas to heat pump hot water, you can disconnect your gas supply, immediately eliminating the quarterly connection charge. This alone is a substantial saving that contributes to the overall cost-effectiveness of them switching from gas to heat pump hot water.

How long does it take to install a heat pump?

A heat pump hot water system is typically a quick replacement for your old electric water heater. Our trucks are on the road right now containing new heat pumps ready for installation.

Don’t waste money employing multiple tradespeople.

Did you know that the installation of a new hot water system, including a heat pump, typically requires the installation of plumbing, gas and electric components?  At Cheapa Hot Water, we are licensed and qualified to undertake all work necessary.

This requires the experience and qualifications of both a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician. At Cheapa Hot Water, we are licensed and qualified to undertake any plumbing and electrical work required to complete your hot water system installation or repair quickly, and within budget. Plumbers who do not specialise in the installation of hot water heaters may need to outsource the electrical work required to another tradesperson, thereby holding up your hot water system repair or installation, adding extra expense due to additional call-out fees charged by employing two tradespeople.

Common heat pump problems.

When your heat pump isn’t working properly, it can put additional strain on other parts of the system.  Over time, this can lead to unnecessary wear and tear which decreases the lifespan of the hot water system –  even complete failure and no hot water!

Without proper circulation, stagnant water in the hot water tank can accumulate in the system leading to an increased risk of bacterial growth.  Legionella bacteria is a common byproduct of this.  Stagnation in your hot water heater can create favourable conditions for bacteria to multiply which poses a health risk if the contaminated water is used.

Signs your hot water heater pump needs replacing (repair)

Uneven hot water temperature throughout your home
A faulty hot water heater pump commonly causes uneven distribution of hot water throughout your home.  For example, hot water in the bathroom may be unaffected whilst the hot water in the kitchen may be lukewarm or cold. If you’re experiencing uneven hot water temperatures throughout your home, contact our friendly team for advice.

Slow delivery of hot water to your taps
The most noticeable problem caused by a faulty hot water heater pump is the delay in receiving hot water to taps, showers and baths. When the pump isn’t circulating hot water correctly, it may take longer for hot water to reach the taps.  This also wastes a lot of water while you waiting for the hot water to be delivered. If you have noticed you’re waiting longer for hot water to come out of your taps, contact our hot water maintenance specialists for advice.

Intermittent hot and cold water
When you’re having a shower, do you ever notice that the hot water sometimes goes cold, then hot again?  This occurs when the hot water heater pump isn’t functioning correctly and is often referred to as the ‘cold water sandwich effect’. The faulty pump is not able to maintain a consistent hot water flow and temperature.  If this is happening at your home, contact us for assistance.

Reduced hot water heater efficiency
A faulty hot water heater pump can lead to reduced efficiency because, without proper circulation, the water heater may have to work harder to meet the demand for hot water temperature.  This leads to increased energy consumption and higher energy bills.

An increase in your electricity or gas bills
In hot water systems where the pump is integrated with a timer or thermostatic control, a malfunctioning pump may run continuously or not operate when needed. This can result in unnecessary energy usage, leading to higher electricity or gas bills.  If you’ve noticed you’re suddenly using more gas or electricity, check your bills to see if there is an unexplained spike in energy consumption. If this is the case, contact us for advice with your energy handy.
