Unreliable hot water supply problems.
We were contacted by a customer in Cammeray (North Shore) whose hot water supply had become increasingly unreliable.
During a hot shower, they would get an unexpected blast of cold water. The hot water supply was taking longer to come through to the taps.
While they endured this over the Summer, as the weather turned cold, the game of water temperature roulette became too much to bear. They contacted us for advice.
Typically, an unreliable hot water supply is a sign that your water heater needs repairing or servicing. Common issues may include:
- Inconsistent water temperature and fluctuations between hot and cold water.
- Extended times for hot water to reach the tap.
- Water temperature is too hot or too cold, despite setting adjustments.
What causes hot water fluctuation problems?
Typically, hot water fluctuation problems are a sign of a faulty water heater tempering valve. For this Cammeray customer, we organised to visit the property later that day to assess and repair the problem so they could go back to enjoying reliable hot water.
Once onsite, our predictions were correct! The tempering valve on the customer’s Rheem Stellar gas hot water heater was faulty. Our trucks carry hundreds of water heater replacement parts, including tempering valves, for a wide range of makes and models. Within an hour or so, we had removed the faulty tempering valve and installed a brand new one.
Whilst onsite, we ran diagnositic tests of other important operational parts of the Rheem water heater to ensure they were performing correctly. Everything was fine and no further maintenance was required.
Now, the customer can enjoy hot showers without any nasty surprises. Importantly, the correctly operating tempering valve will reduce the risk of scalding, making it safer for everyone in the household. The new valve will improved the efficiency of the hot water system, ensuring water reaches the desired temperature faster. This reduces water wastage, lowering the customer’s energy bills.

How does a hot water heater tempering valve work?
The tempering valve (sometimes referred to as the temperature valve) on a hot water system mixes hot water with cold water to ensure a safe and consistent water temperature that is suitable for household use. It helps prevent hot water scalding by regulating the water temperature.
Without the tempering valve (temperature valve), the hot water produced by a water heater can be too high for showering, bathing or washing hands. To cool down the water temperature, the tempering valve mixes cold water with the hot water to achieve a safe and comfortable temperature for safe household use.
A sensor in the tempering valve monitors the water temperature and a mixing valve then adjusts the ratio of hot and cold water to achieve the desired temperature.
The tempering valve is usually installed near the hot water heater or the plumbing between the water heater and the fixtures.
Along with preventing scalding, the tempering valve actually helps reduce energy consumption by allowing the hot water system to be set at a higher temperature whilst helping to extend the life of plumbing fixtures and reduce build up of sediment because it reduces the temperature differential between hot and cold water.

We are qualified to undertake any plumbing and electrical work required to ensure your hot water heater is repaired quickly and within budget. Plumbers who do not specialise in the installation of hot water heaters may need to outsource the electrical work required to another tradesperson, thereby holding up your hot water system repair or installation, adding extra expense due to additional call-out fees charged by employing two tradespeople.
Your hot water heater is an expensive appliance. Don’t risk voiding your warranty.
Additionally, most manufacturers won’t cover the terms of your hot water system warranty if it isn’t installed by a licensed hot water technician or a qualified plumber. Hot water tanks are an expensive appliance so why would you risk voiding your warranty by installing it yourself or employing the services of someone who isn’t licensed?
