When this Gladesville customer’s water heater failed, it did so in a very dramatic way!
We were recently received a distressed call from the customer when they noticed their water heater tilting to the side… The customer was able to send us photos and we escalated the job to an emergency response. From the photos we could see that the bottom of the water heater tank had actually popped out due to over-pressurising of the internal cylinder, leaving the unit completely beyond repair (and in a somewhat precarious position).
This type of failure highlights the importance of regular maintenance, especially checking the temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve. This valve is a critical safety feature designed to protect the system from dangerous pressure build-up. When it fails or isn’t functioning properly, the tank can be placed under extreme strain — and in rare cases, can rupture.

Why over-pressurising of a water heater may occur

- Overheating water – caused by a malfunctioning thermostat or element, leading to expanding water volume and higher pressure.

Emergency hot water repair. Giving the customer peace of mind.
As would be expected, the ruptured Rheem water heater tank was beyond economical repair. The only option was the supply and installation of a new Rheem hot water heater in its place.
First, we discussed the customer’s household hot water usage requirements. At the time of new water heater installation, this is a great time to upgrade or downgrade based on the household water heater usage.
Considering this, and the customer’s budget, the customer chose a new Rheem 160 litre twin element electric water heater. With the new water heater delivered to the property within the hour, we installed it immediately and the customer was back enjoying trouble free hot water by the end of the day.
Easy DIY water heater checks you can do
Every day, your water heater works hard behind the scenes, quietly delivering reliable hot water when you need it. Until something goes wrong! With quick regular checks and maintenance every few months, you can keep your water heater running efficiently and avoid unexpected (and often costly) breakdowns.
1. Check for leaks
Inspect the tank, pipes, and valves monthly for any signs of water leaks, rust, or corrosion. Early detection can prevent bigger issues.
2. Test the pressure relief valve
Carefully lift the valve lever and ensure it releases water for about 10 seconds. The lever should move freely—replace the valve if it’s stuck or unresponsive.
3. Monitor water temperature
Regularly check the hot water at your taps. If it feels cooler than usual or runs out quickly, it may indicate a problem that needs attention.
4. Watch for ants
Inspect the area around the base of your hot water system—ants often nest there during colder months and can interfere with electrical components.
5. Clear weeds and debris
Keep the base of your water heater free from weeds, grass, and soil buildup. This prevents moisture retention and reduces the risk of rust and corrosion at the bottom of the tank.
