Reasons water heaters leak from the top.

If you notice water pooling at the top of your water heater, here are the most common reasons:

1. A loose or faulty inlet / outlet connection

  • Cause: Over time, the hot water outlet or cold water inlet pipes may become loose or develop small leaks.
  • Repair: Inspect the connections at the top of the water heater. Tighten any loose fittings with a wrench. If the leak persists, the fittings may need to be replaced. Contact us for assistance.

2. Temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve leak

  • Cause: The T&P relief valve is a safety feature designed to release pressure if it becomes too high. If the valve is faulty or if pressure builds up, it can leak.
  • Repair: Check the valve for signs of leaking or damage. If it’s leaking, it may need to be replaced. Ensure the pressure in the tank is not exceeding recommended levels.

3. Corrosion at the top of the water heater tank

  • Cause: In older systems, corrosion can form around fittings, seals, or even on the top of the tank, leading to leaks.
  • Repair: If the corrosion is significant, it may indicate that the tank is nearing the end of its lifespan. In this case, a replacement may be necessary.

4. An anode rod port leak

  • Cause: The anode rod, which helps prevent tank corrosion, can develop leaks around its port.
  • Repair: Inspect the anode rod and its surrounding seal. Replace it if necessary. If you need assistance, call 0410 693 532. We’re here to help.
