Fix Rinnai gas hot water system.
We were contacted by a customer at Cromer, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, whose Rinnai B26 gas hot water heater was producing inconsistent hot water. The temperature appeared to fluctuate at any time – sometimes hot, sometimes lukewarm.
Once onsite, we could see that the Rinnai gas hot water system was quite old. Hot water specialist, Steve, ran a series of tests to ascertain what was causing the inconsistencies with the hot water temperature.
Interestingly, the wall-mounted hot water system was working fine and tested correctly at a temperature of 50 degrees.
Upon further investigation, Steve found that a tempering valve had been installed underneath the hot water heater. This was faulty.
Tempering valves don’t need to be fitted to a preset 50 degree instantaneous gas hot water heater. Steve removed the incorrectly installed tempering valve and, upon further testing, the system appeared to be working correctly again.
A few days after completing the repair, Steve called the customer and they were happy to report that the gas system appeared to be working correctly and there were no more inconsistencies with the hot water temperatures.

- Assess the site for safety and taken any necessary actions.
- Isolate the gas hot water system from the gas supply.
- Inspect and test burner assembly. Working correctly.
- Inspect and test thermocouple. Working correctly.
- Inspect and test unitrol valve. Working correctly.
- Inspect and test anode for wear and tear. Working correctly.
- Remove incorrectly fitted tempering valve.
- Clean up the site and remove any associated rubbish.
