Gas hot water vs heat pump water heater.
This Sydney customer (based in Frenchs Forest on the Northern Beaches) was using gas to heat their hot water. With the rising cost of living and concerns about their effect on the environment, they contacted us for advice on the long-term advantages of switching from a gas water heater to a heat pump. We were happy to help.
First, we discussed heat pump water heater options and the process involved in switching them over from gas hot water.
At this property, their hot water system was the last appliance relying on gas. They had already switched their heating and cooking from gas to electric. The conversion over to a heat pump meant they could now disconnect from the gas grid entirely – immediately saving the quarterly service fee charged by the gas company.
Next, we discussed heat pump options. They had been very happy with the reliability of their old Rheem gas water heater so decided to install a new Rheem AmbiPower heat pump (280 litre). This was a great choice for this family based on their household hot water usage and budget.
We arrange to visit the property the following day and disconnect and remove their old hot water heater and install the new heat pump. By the afternoon, they were enjoying environmentally friendly hot water supply and immediate savings on their energy bills. They were elated.
The immediate benefits of heat pump hot water vs gas
Since the installation of the Rheem heat pump, the customer benefited from the following immediate cost savings:
- Reduced energy bills: The reduction in energy consumption from a heat pump is significant so the customer will notice an immediate reduction in their hot water heater costs and energy bills.
- A consistent hot water supply: The new Rheem heat pump utilises the latest in technology to provide a reliable supply of energy efficient hot water. The customer should never run out of hot water, even during peak usage times. The heat pumps energy efficient operation will be a great improvement over their older gas water heater.
- No more gas connection charges: By disconnecting the gas supply, the customer has immediately eliminated the quarterly connection charges. This alone is a substantial saving that contributes to the overall cost-effectiveness of them switching from gas to heat pump hot water.
The long term advantages of switching from gas to heat pump hot water
- Low maintenance hot water: Rheem’s AmbiPower heat pumps are built to last and comes with a generous 7 year warranty (see below). The heat pump requires minimal maintenance, reducing the hassle and cost of upkeep over the years.
- Potential increase in property value: Energy-efficient upgrades, like this one, can increase the value of a property. Australian property buyers are increasingly looking for homes with green features that promise lower running costs and environmental impact.
- Peace of mind: Knowing they’re making a positive impact on the environment whilst saving money in the process, provides great peace of mind for the homeowners. It’s a win for the customer and a win for the environment.
* Rheem AmbiPower Warranty: 7 year cylinder supply. 3 years cylinder labour. 3 years sealed system supply and labour. 1 year parts supply and labour.

Rheem AmbiPower Heat Pump
Capacity : 280 litres | Number of people : 6 | Warranty : 7 years
The Rheem AmbiPower heat pump is a great replacement of aging gas and electric water heaters, offering a high Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 5.2 (see below for more information).
AmbiPower heat pumps have been designed and tested to withstand the harsh Australian conditions. With its advanced wrap around microchannel heating technology for uniform and faster water heating, the AmbiPower is suitable for harsh water conditions and cold climates (with an operating range from -6°C) to higher ambient temperatures.
Key energy and cost saving factors
- Increased energy efficiency: The Rheem AmbiPower Heat Pump is designed to be highly efficient, using ambient air to heat water. This means it requires less energy to operate compared to traditional gas heaters, translating into lower electricity bills.
- Reduced environmental impact: By moving away from fossil fuels to heat the hot water, the heat pump reduces the users carbon footprint making them a more sustainable option that contributes to a greener planet.
- Cost savings: The initial investment in a heat pump is offset by the long-term savings on energy bills.
