We recently received a call from a distressed older customer at Rosehill in Western Sydney whose old electric hot water system had started leaking very badly. The hot water heater storage tank had corroded and cracked.
Once onsite, we assessed whether the hot water heater was able to be fixed. Unfortunately, it was extremely old and beyond economical repair. Over time, the internal storage tank had corroded due to minerals in the water which led to a significent crack where the water was leaking from.
Early detection of hot water tank corrosion can prevent leaks from occurring. We recommend that our customers get their hot water heater serviced every 5 years to detect and rectify problems before they lead to catastrophic breakdown or a burst hot water heater. Before replacing the hot water heater with a new one, we asked the customer whether her hot water usage had changed (and may change in the future) and whether she ever ran out of hot water. The old water heater had a small 80 litre tank. She mentioned that she was minding her grandchildren regularly and, when they came to stay, she often ran out of hot water.
