Lead-free water heaters by 2026.
Significant changes are coming to the hot water and plumbing industry, with Australia set to mandate lead-free plumbing products by 2026.
At Cheapa Hot Water, we’re committed to keeping our customers informed about industry changes that impact their homes and businesses. One of the most significant changes on the horizon is Australia’s transition to lead-free plumbing products, including water heaters, by mid-2026.
Whether you’re building, renovating, or simply replacing a hot water system, it’s important to understand what this change means and how to prepare.
Why lead-free water heaters and plumbing products?
To further protect public health, particularly drinking water quality, Australia is moving towards mandatory lead-free plumbing products that come into contact with drinking water. This includes taps, valves, pipes, fittings and water heaters.
From May 2026, all plumbing products used in potable (drinkable) water systems must meet new lead-free requirements as part of the Australian Building Codes Board’s (ABCB) updates to the National Construction Code.
What does “lead-free” mean?
A “lead-free” product contains no more than 0.25% lead in the wetted surfaces (the parts that come into contact with water). This is a major reduction from previous allowances and aligns with international standards in places like the United States and Europe.
The move to lead-free plumbing is a proactive step to:
- Reduce potential lead exposure in drinking water.
- Align with international health and safety standards.
- Future-proof homes and infrastructure for long-term water safety.
How to identify lead-free products
To make it easier for consumers and plumbers to identify compliant products, a new blue WaterMark certification label has been introduced.
Products that meet the lead-free standards will feature a blue WaterMark certification label. Products with the traditional red label are still compliant until the 2026 deadline, but will eventually be phased out for potable water applications.
What these changes mean to hot water systems.
Many water heater manufacturers have already begun releasing lead-free models to meet the upcoming changes.
If you’re planning a hot water system replacement in the next couple of years, it’s worth considering switching to a lead-free unit now to future-proof your home. We can advise you on making the right decision.
At Cheapa Hot Water, we’re already seeing lead-free water heaters and components enter the market. Our team can help you identify and install compliant systems that meet both current needs and future standards.
Do I need to replace my current water heater with a lead-free one?
No – existing water heaters installed before the deadline can remain in place and used as normal. However, if you’re planning a new installation or upgrade (especially in 2025 or 2026), we recommend opting for a lead-free certified system to ensure ongoing compliance.

Lead-free water heater installation
New Vulcan 315L Hot Water Heater Installation – Now Lead-Free!
We recently helped a Sydney homeowner upgrade their outdated hot water system with a brand-new Vulcan 315L electric storage unit. This reliable, high-capacity solution that also meets Australia’s upcoming lead-free plumbing requirements.
Rheem hot water system replacement.
The customer’s aging Rheem heat pump had become less efficient over time, leading to inconsistent performance and higher electricity bills. Rather than invest in costly repairs, the homeowner opted for a cost-effective, long-term solution and, based on their hot water usage and budget, we recommended the Vulcan 315L electric model.
The Vulcan 315L is a dependable and affordable option for medium to large households. Built with quality materials and backed by Rheem’s manufacturing expertise, it delivers excellent performance without the high price tag.
But this installation had an added benefit that makes it especially relevant right now…
Compliance with Australia’s upcoming lead-free water heater standards.
The new Vulcan system we installed came with a blue WaterMark certification label, signifying it complies with Australia’s new lead-free plumbing regulations.
We handled every aspect of this water heater replacement job including:
- drained, disconnected and removed the old Rheem heat pump
- made the necessary plumbing and electrical adjustments
- supplied and installed the new Vulcan lead-free water heater
- took away and recycled the old water heater
