What’s wrong with my gas hot water system?

Below we have listed some common problems we encounter with gas hot water systems. This information might help you determine what the problem is and get you back enjoying trouble-free hot water faster.

Running out of hot water? Check if your hot water storage tank leaking.

IMPORTANT: If your hot water heater is leaking a substantial amount, i.e. more than a bucket of water in 24 hours, we strongly recommend you call us for advice and emergency assistance as it could be an indication of a serious problem.  If not, read on.

Leaking hot water heaters is one of the most common emergency calls we receive from customers every day.  The outside location of most gas hot water heaters often means that most people don’t realise their hot water heater is leaking until they start running out of hot water prematurely. Worse, it may not be until they completely run out of hot water that they take measures to locate the problem and, only then, discover the leak.

Of course, a leaking indoor gas hot water heater can also go unnoticed and usually causes bigger issues caused by internal water damage.  This is why we strongly recommend that your hot water system should be serviced every 5 years as this should identify and resolve problems even before they arise.

Unfortunately, in time, all hot water heaters will eventually fail and need replacing.  For storage water heaters this is usually evident by water leaking from the storage tank continuously. You can often temporarily maintain the supply of hot water by turning off the cold water supply valve on the inlet to the water heater in between usage periods.

For substantial leaks from electric hot water systems you can completely turn off the water supply to the heater along with the power switch in your electrical meter board. If your gas hot water heater is leaking, turn off the gas valve beside the heater to isolate the gas supply.

No hot water or limited hot water supply? Parts may be broken or malfunctioning

All gas hot water systems contain parts that work together to make it function correctly and efficiently. If one of these parts is malfunctioning or broken then, at worst, you’ll have no hot water.

In some cases you may have hot water but find you run out quickly – usually after someone has a shower.  This is usually because, due to a broken part, the water is not heating up quick enough after use or keeping the water in the tank hot ready for use.

Faulty thermostat or element(s): A broken thermostat and/or heating element(s) within the hot water system will mean the water inside the tank doesn’t heat up quickly enough, or doesn’t heat up at all.

Leaking valve(s): At the side of every storage hot tank there is a temperature pressure relief valve.  This valve can malfunction and may leak. If it leaks constantly you could lose enough hot water, even in a short period of time, to run out.

Leaking water pipes: If any one of the water pipes that lead from your hot water heater to the various appliances and taps develop a leak that can, depending on the extent of the leak, cause you to run out of hot water.

Hot water takes too long to heat up after running out

If you frequently run out of hot water and it takes too long to heat up again, the hot water recovery rate of your current hot water heater is probably inadequate for your household hot water usage.

While some gas hot water systems will heat up again very quickly, often they are not very energy efficient and have a low star efficiency rating. It is possible however to reach that happy medium of a fast hot water recovery rate and a system that is economical and is not going to add hundreds of dollars to your household energy bills.

Gas hot water system is making strange noises

Hot water heaters make noise whilst they go about their job of heating cold water and sending to your pipes and appliances.  If you notice a change in the noises coming from your hot water heater or it because increasingly audible each time you turn on the hot water tap, then it might be a good time do some further investigation.

Does the anode need replacing?

Inside most electricgas and  solar hot water heaters, there is a special magnesium rod called an anode. All vitreous enamel steel hot water heaters have these anodes installed by the manufacture to protect the tank from corrosion and its replacement can prolong the life of your heater substantially.

Also known as ‘sacrificial anodes’, through electrolysis, the anode rod will corrode/dissolve instead of the water heater’s exposed steel through a process called electrolysis.  It protects the metal from inside the hot water heater from rusting. Electrolysis occurs when the two dissimilar pieces of submerged metal react with one another to create a voltage.

The anode’s lifespan is limited to around 3 – 7 yrs, depending on the water quality and usage. Once the anode is spent your hot water heater rapidly starts to corrode from the inside. The anode can be replaced quickly at a reasonable cost – but not too many people know this. But they do know that a rusted hot water heater on average will cost between $1200 – $2200 to have replaced.

Hot water cylinders don’t just die of old age! They simply corrode away because the anode inside no longer gives the heater any necessary protection. Most people underestimate the age of their heaters and this can prove very costly.

One simple thing you can do is book a service call-out with our technicians every 5 years. We’ll inspect your hot water heater and make sure the anode is doing its job. If not, it can be replaced thereby preventing unexpected breakdown and costly hot water system replacement. Call 0410 693 532 to book a hot water service.

Preventing a gas hot water system breakdown

There is no convenient time for your gas hot water system to fail.  That’s why it’s important to get your HWS services regularly so worn out parts are replaced and breakdowns are prevented.

Ideally, your gas hot water heater should be serviced every 5 years? When our technicians service a hot water system, we test all elements of the HWS to ensure they are working correctly and repair or replace any faulty parts.  A hot water service every five years is a very small price to pay when compared to the cost of replacing your gas hot water heater in the event of irreparable failure.

During winter much more pressure is placed on all parts of a hot water heater so, if they are faulty or deteriorating, are much more likely to fail.  In every repair we undertake over winter the valves we replaced were more than five years old and the HWS had not been serviced by a licensed hot water heater specialist during that time.  Had this been the case these breakdowns would very likely not have occurred.  Your car gets serviced regularly and so too should your hot water system thereby preventing inconvenient breakdowns and expensive replacement costs.

Regularly servicing your gas hot water system gives you peace of mind

The regular service of your hot water heater by one of our licensed technicians will ensure you enjoy trouble-free hot water for many years to come.  It will ensure your system continues working safely in all weather conditions thereby saving you money on costly repairs and the inconvenience of future breakdown.

Did you know that most manufacturers won’t cover the terms of your hot water system warranty if it isn’t installed or serviced by a licensed hot water technician or qualified hot water plumber. Your hot water heater is an expensive appliance so don’t risk voiding your warranty by employing the services of someone who isn’t licensed to fix it.

We are licensed water heater installers and plumbers and preferred service technicians for all major hot water manufacturers including RheemSolahart, Aquamax, Apricus, VulcanEdwards Solar, Everhot and many more.
