Hot water heater relocation. Moving from inside to outside.
Yes, you can relocate or move a water heater from inside to outside – and we do it quite frequently for our customers.
There are several reasons why customers ask us to relocate or move their hot water system from inside to outside. The most common reason is to create more space. Secondly, water heaters aren’t the most attractive appliance and customers often want them moved so they can renovate or improve the interior design aesthetics of the home.
We recently moved a North Shore customer’s hot water system from inside their laundry to outside in an unused area of their garden, next to their air conditioning unit. Within a few hours, the customer was back enjoying trouble free hot water and could start re-organising their laundry.
The process of relocating or moving a hot water heater
Moving the water heater can create more space
The customer’s existing Rheem electric hot water heater was taking up a significant area of their small laundry. The customer was desperate to free some space so they could add much needed storage. Relocating the water heater outside was an easy solution.
Because there was nothing wrong with the water heater, we were able to drain the water, disconnect it, and reinstall it outdoors. Importantly, the customer’s Rheem water heater was suitable for indoor and outdoor installation.
Planning the move of your water heater
It should be noted that moving a hot water heater does take some planning and consideration, as follows:
- Location: Choosing the right spot outside that is both convenient and safe for the heater. The water heater must be suitable for indoor or outdoor installation.
- Plumbing: Ensuring that the water supply and drainage systems can be efficiently connected to the new location.
- Electrical: Making sure the electrical connections are safe and compliant.
- Insulation: When relocating outdoors, protecting the heater from weather elements to maintain its efficiency and longevity.
The water heater relocation process
Below is a step-by-step overview of the process we follow when relocating a hot water system outside.
- Preparation: First, we drained the water heater so it was easier to move.
- Disconnecting: The water heater is then disconnected from the existing plumbing and electrical connections in the laundry.
- New Location Setup: Outside, we prepared a solid, level surface for the water heater to be placed. This includes ensuring proper drainage and making necessary adjustments to the plumbing and electrical systems to accommodate the water heater’s new location.
- Reconnection: Once the water heater was in place, we reconnected the necessary plumbing and electrical systems. Insulation was added to protect the unit from outdoor weather conditions.
- Testing: After ensuring all connections were secure, we turned the power back on and tested the heater to confirm it was functioning correctly.
The benefits of relocation the water heater outside
The relocation of the customer’s water heater brought several immediate and long term benefits, as follows:
- Increased Space: The most noticeable benefit was the increased space in the laundry, immediately making it more functional (and aesthetically pleasing).
- Improved Organisation: With the heater out of the way, our customer could reorganise the laundry, add more storage and improve the design aesethetics.
- Enhanced Safety: Moving the water heater outside reduces the risk of potential water damage in the laundry should the tank start to leak or fail.
- Efficiency: With added insulation, the water heater will now operate more efficiently – even outside. This will improve energy consumption and hot water supply.
- Maintenance: Relocating the water heater outside makes maintenance easier and the repair process, if necessary, easier.
- Property value: Creating more space in the laundry, along with the addition of more storage, should increase the property’s value and make it more appealing to potential buyers (should the owners ever decide to sell).

Did you know that often the repair and installation of a hot water system requires the expertise and qualifications of both a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician?
We are qualified to undertake any plumbing and electrical work required to ensure your hot water heater is repaired quickly and within budget. Plumbers who do not specialise in the installation of hot water heaters may need to outsource the electrical work required to another tradesperson, thereby holding up your hot water system repair or installation, adding extra expense due to additional call-out fees charged by employing two tradespeople.
Your hot water heater is an expensive appliance. Don’t risk voiding your warranty.
Additionally, most manufacturers won’t cover the terms of your hot water system warranty if it isn’t installed by a licensed hot water technician or a qualified plumber. Hot water tanks are an expensive appliance so why would you risk voiding your warranty by installing it yourself or employing the services of someone who isn’t licensed?
